Q: Can I compost cosmos plants after the season?

A: Absolutely! Chop and drop foliage to enrich soil naturally.  

Q: Can I grow cosmos in containers?  

A: Absolutely! Use well-drained soil mixed with organic compost, and ensure containers have drainage holes. Place them in full sun and water with rainwater to reduce environmental impact.  

Q: Why are my cosmos plants leggy and not flowering?  

A: Leggy growth often results from insufficient light or overcrowding. For bushier plants:  

- Pinch out growing tips when seedlings have 3–4 true leaves.  

- Space plants **30–45cm apart** for airflow.  

- Ensure they receive 6–8 hours of daily sun.

Q: Can I save seeds from my cosmos collection for next year?  

A: Yes! Allow flowers to dry on the plant, then collect seeds from spent blooms. Store them in a cool, dark place in recyclable paper envelopes. Note: Hybrid varieties (e.g., Double Click Cranberries) may not breed true.

Q: My cosmos leaves are turning yellow. What’s wrong?

A: Yellowing leaves can signal:  

• Overwatering: Ensure soil is moist but well-drained.  
• Nutrient deficiency: Feed with organic liquid feed every 2–3 weeks if it’s obviously low at present, and in the long term improve the organic matter in the soil.  
• Pests: Check for aphidsgive them a blast with the garden hose. Also plant varieties of plants in your garden that encourage natural predators 

Q: Can I plant cosmos in partial shade?

A: Cosmos thrive in full sun (6+ hours daily).

Q: How do I prepare soil for planting cosmos?

A: To prepare your garden for Cosmos flowers:

1. Mix organic compost into planting beds for nutrients.  

2. Avoid heavy clay; improve drainage with organic matter. 

3. For pots, use peat-free multipurpose compost (and preferably coir free) and slow-release organic feed such as my organic version of John Innes fertiliser.
